The goslings make their debut appearance

The nest perched precariously on the tree stump island in the pond clearly wasn't big enough for the six fluffy little yellow goslings. Momma Goose did what she could to protect them under her breast feathers, she tried to spread her wings to keep them safe, she used her beak to gently persuade them to keep warm but six little newly hatched Canadian goslings were following their instincts and one by one they tumbled out of the nest and into the pond. Poppa goose forgot to chase Darcy the mallard drake off the bank, he ignored Gertie and Gustav our resident confused geese , the proud gander was totally preoccupied by the tiny little goslings as they left the nest forever. Later, we saw the little family gathered on the bank, resting in the sunshine, the two adult geese anxiously alert for danger. Gertie and Gustav watching closely, heads popping up like periscopes from the high grass of the pasture were careful not to challenge the aggressive gander but were clearly fascinated by the new arrivals on the pond. We have posted photographs of the new arrivals on the Photogallery page of the web site, enjoy.

Lamb Chop, Macho and Daisy Mae made a break for freedom today. I guess it's true that grass "on the other side" looks greener, sadly, the grass looking greener is the farm garden and the orchard..neither of which is open to Daisy Mae and her cohorts but Daisy Mae and lamb Chop were in no mood to observe formalities and both charged the gate which I was trying desperately to close behind the old Ford truck. My instructions were clear and concise," open the gate, let the truck through and then close said gate"....but...uh Greg, but.....! Oblivious to my panic, the truck engine growled and Greg, eyes facing forward took the Ford through the gate...with  a triumphant Lamb chop, Daisy Mae and jubilant Macho following closely behind.  Lamb Chop went one way, Daisy Mae head down and determindly headed me off as I tried to divert the escapees and Macho disappeared into my flower garden. Lamb Chop was recaptured by his horns but as I tried to close the gate and hold on to the wriggling and very indignant yearling lamb, Daisy Mae faked a pass and made an end run before I could restrain her. My garden was threatened by the break for freedom, my orchard would never survive the rampant heifer and the evasive lamb...and where was Macho ?, oh, Macho was in Heaven, head buried in my pansy bed, purple and yellow blooms hanging out of his mouth !!!! Thank God and peanuts.....Lamb Chop and Macho would sell their souls for a tasty treat and If the other two thirds of the Amigos were surrendering, Daisy Mae wanted to know why. Greg reappeared from the barn to find me hanging on to Daisy Maes headcollar with one hand Lamb Chops horn in the other and trying to reopen the gate with my butt. Why did I have a problem ?, he does it every day, I just have to be positive.......( exit stage left..to kick the wall !!!....after they were safely out of my garden.) NEXT TIME......I do the driving and Greg will do the Amigo management ! All three were eventually "persuaded"  to return to their designated pasture, less than happy, Greg looked smug and I sat down to write an apology to my surgeon (and God for the language that had come into my head !!)

Well, it's gone 7am, which means it's time for me to sign off and get ready for another  quiet relaxing day (NOT) on the ranch. Take care, keep safe, M
