Things on the ranch can never be taken for granted. Traditionally, after the sharp frosts of Winter, the fruit trees burst into a field of pink and white blossoms, the bees flit from branch to branch and the leaves on the trees begin to bud. This year, as August drifted into September, the barn apple tree has defied the season, new leaves are unfurling and little white petals are opening on branches that, in reality should be preparing for the ravages of Autumn and Winter. Just when I thought I was starting to understand, everything defies logic. The lush green pastures of Spring are now withered and dry, the clear water of the ranch pond is tinted green and coated with pond weed and dust fills the air. Summer is behind us, heavy rain clouds fill the horizon and the weather forecasters are once again getting excited about the uncertainty of their daily predictions.
