Apple Blossom in September??!!

As the seasons change and the long dry days of Summer make way for the tenuous dark clouds and gusty winds of Autumn, life on the ranch drifts into yet another season, yet another year. Harvesting has been ongoing through the Summer months, the corn, squash cucumber, grapes, pumpkin and onions have all been sequestered in the old chicken coop run. Our resident doe ( grrrrr) and her twin fawns have doubtless viewed the bountiful harvest through the six foot fence wire....almost certainly considered sampling the ripening corn, munching through the grape vines and trampling through the cucumber. This year, our garden smorgasbord is inaccessible to our uninvited wild life and Doris and her voracious offspring will have to feast on the forest and the brush which they are more than welcome to share.
Things on the ranch can never be taken for granted. Traditionally, after the sharp frosts of Winter, the fruit trees burst into a field of pink and white blossoms, the bees flit from branch to branch and the leaves on the trees begin to bud. This year, as August drifted into September, the barn apple tree has defied the season, new leaves are unfurling and little white petals are opening on branches that, in reality should be preparing for the ravages of Autumn and Winter. Just when I thought I was starting to understand, everything defies logic. The lush green pastures of Spring are now withered and dry, the clear water of the ranch pond is tinted green and coated with pond weed and dust fills the air. Summer is behind us, heavy rain clouds fill the horizon and the weather forecasters are once again getting excited about the uncertainty of their daily predictions.
Loving life....Take care, keep safe M
