Kids kids and goat kids !

Song and Cody have started to grow up. Currently they inhale their bottles faster than their little tummies can fill. Those two goat kids are going to have to learn to supplement their diet with some “grown up” rations as their “before feeding” anxious bleating has now been extended to the resounding “after feed” bellow. The little twins take their bottles without taking a breath, once latched on to the teat those babies need to be prised off, the rubber teats can be pressure flattened and the bottles can collapse but they aren’t going to let go until the final creamy drop has been drained. Both are growing strong and healthy but it is time that those little tummies learnt that grass is an alternative (and eventually only) source of satisfaction. Today their accommodation has been moved and they are now installed in the big goat pen with Alissia and Acorn who I have to say were less than enthusiastic about the two little upstarts taking up residence and weren’t slow to make Song and Cody fully aware who is in charge.

Yesterday was little Cole’s birthday and the birthday party came to the ranch, children, LOTS of children arrived all eager and impatient to visit the ranch babies, love up our Shire Mare Lady,  feed the seemingly ever hungry sheep and check the nest boxes for shiny green eggs. Little ones, stumbling through the barn, tiny fingers hesitatingly offering peanuts to the waiting ewes, hiding behind mom’s knees when Lady’s gentle head lowered for a juicy carrot and squealing with delight at the boisterous antics of the little goat kids. The fluffy newly hatched chicks had little hands so carefully touching and excited baby faces peering into the brooder box. It was a lot of fun….I think we enjoy it even more than our young guests AND a pretty amazing plate of cup cakes magically made its way into the farm truck. Looking forward already to next years party !!!

Cody took advantage of the unexpected lull in the rain and took his second riding lesson on black Morgan gelding Roman. It has to be said Roman was less than co operative, was clearly fixated on the gate and an early exit from the lesson. As Cody worked on Roman’s steering, gears and brakes his unwilling mount was concentrating on dinner. Well done Cody, galloping next lesson ??

Time to move, if I don’t get this entry posted there will be a lynching party after me ! Take care, keep safe, M
