Our Canadian Goose population is at war. Gertie and Gustav lived here since early spring. We had no problems, lady Quest and the geese lived in total harmony. Gustav has accepted that "love me, love my horse" is the way to win his way into Gerties nest and when Gertie waddles the pasture in Quests hoof prints, Gustav is never very far away. Sadly, the visiting pair of Geese are less inclined to fratenise with the local community and are aggressively trying to persuade Gertie and Gustav to adopt a different pond in a different pasture preferably in a different State. Yesterday Gustav and Gertie were doing their typical 3 flyovers of the barn honking their early morning greetings to the shires still munching breakfast in the barn when the visiting gander decided to check out the flight path. Clearly the two residents were encroaching contested air space and an in- flight battle ensued. Anticipating an "issue" we led Lady and Quest out to the pasture up the farm road when the three enbattled geese took off like a flight of F16s out of the pasture, necks outstretched, hissing and wings beating. Gertie and Gustav, hotly pursued by the territorial gander flew right over Ladys' head and almost landed on Quests back. Quest totally unconcerned...Lady freaked !!! We were going to the pasture ..I thought,.... before I had time to think "oh *******" we were heading back to the barn and Lady was in no mood for discussion !!! Gertie and Gustav tucked themselves onto the road as close to the one ton shire gelding as a pair of chicken geese could respectfully hide and, having persuaded a less than happy Lady to reverse her retreat,Greg, Quest, Lady and I accompanied by their apprehensive feathered friends wadled into the pasture. Phew....I ton of horse...back surgery and equine panic don't meet doctors requirements ! Thankfully, me being a worry wart paid off and for once, anticipating a crisis paid off. It's all good.
