I am impressed with the way that America has celebrated her history and passed down the sense of pride to the younger generation. …..however ( there’s always a however with me, isn’t there !!) I do recall a trip to the beautiful City of Philadelphia, site of the Liberty Bell. There I was admiring the monument… when I spotted the brass plate, clearly inscribed and polished to perfection. The inscription read something along the lines of “……the bloody oppression of the British” I began to call out to Greg and at the last moment noticed 2 young girls reverently paying homage to the bravery of their ancestors against our “bloody oppression”. Whatever words I was about to utter stuck very firmly in my very ENGLISH throat. Greg spoke to me and I grunted in reply, he nudged me for my response..I ignored him. Concerned he asked what was wrong, again, I ignored his question. Only later, much later and well out of the hearing of those innocent little American girls I explained in my very English accent, “how could I speak, they would have known I am English”…are you bloody oppressed?”
So…back to our very American ranch where I drink very English tea..where do I start? ( oh yes, I’m wearing my Union Jack socks today!!). Lesley and Derek are no longer our WOOFERS ! don’t worry mom and mom on the East Coast, they are no longer our WOOFERS, they are friends and very quickly becoming farmers. So much has happened over the past couple of days, I almost don’t know where to begin except to say that we have laughed so much the State could impose a laughter tax and we’d be broke! Lesley and Derek have both ridden lady, a major achievement when you know how cautious Lesley was about the horses before she came. They learnt how to drive the tractor without kangaroo hops or danger of killing the cats. We had a rooster round up, a chicken roundup, they have been lumberjacks, learned to use chainsaws and axes, they have chopped wood and used the wood splitter. Bravely they entered the sumo pen to clean it out ( really bravely when you recognise that they really eat a lot and the natural progression from eating a lot …is an awful lot of poo). And still they smiled !! Oh yes ….and they should get some kind of award for munching pecan brownies. Smile.
Well, there are so many things that I have just had to summarize but hopefully the photographs show how much fun we had..I mean how hard they worked!!! Please also check out the photographs on the WOOFER page. Time for me to go, have a wonderful holiday, take care with the fireworks please and keep cool. M
