The gray skies weren't telling lies, it rained and it rained and it rained some more. This morning first shift down at the barn was a continuous exercise in dodging raindrops and hopping puddles, it wasn't much fun ! The ewes and lambs were quite clear....we don't do rain ! Scruffy moulting moms crowded their unruly offspring into the barn and no amount of persuasion was going to make them give up their warm dry pen. Dolly, Molly Moo and Rodney were quite prepared and almost anxious to make an expedition back into the jungle that is their pasture. I'm not sure if the 2 cows are short or if they just have regular sized bodies and very short legs but once into the grass it isn't too easy to find them again !!! Their calves are due in late July and we are wondering just how Dollys' calf will turn out. Dolly is part low line Angus and part lots of cute something else but she also appears to have an element of dwarfism. Nature was given a helping hand impregnating Dolly, given her lack of stature I think that little lady would have been quite the challenge to even the most ardent suitor...Wayne "the AI man" was very efficient and Dollys height (or lack of) was no problem at all.

We had an afternoon "off the ranch"...Costco sells the best lemon/ ginger biscuits (cookies) actually they currently sell but apparently an * on the stand means that they will very soon not sell my favourite goody ! I think the staff at the checkout were a little surprised at a trolley ( cart) full of lemon/ginger biscuits, I guess I'm going to have to ration myself and sorry but it's a "no share" treat... they are SO good ! I may have to store them in the safe..but they probably wont last that long !

Little Chance, our bottle fed lamb is growing daily. Three times a day (and sometimes all the time in between !) that little lamb starts to call for her bottle. Chance can yell louder and longer than any of her siblings, she knows just where to position herself to make maximum impact and she does !!! Sadly, Chance is no longer able to snuggle up on my knee, she is just getting too big but it doesn't seem to have occured to her that her front and back legs dangle. More of her hangs off me than I can hold, she is getting big, but she is still a mommys girl.

Gertie the Canadian goose who became enamoured with Quest 2 years ago still pays a visit to the ranch, each morning she and Gustav do a very loud fly over but each visit has turned into an ariel battle with the resident nesting geese. If the eggs are going to hatch, it should be this week, I will update the diary but we are sad to have lost Gertie, she is quite the character and we do miss her in the pasture. Hopefully she and Gustav are doing what geese do best...somewhere else.

Time to go again, the sun is shining, the cuckoo just cuckood and we have a barn full of hungry tummys. Take care, keep well. M

I love your tidbits and as I said sometime ago you should write a book or a pamphlet for the upcoming October farm fest.
