An eventful day on the Ranch.

Another day passed, we has a peek at the sun. We had enough wind to wrap Old Glory around the flagpole in a hitch knot and restrain a pretty faded Union Jack by hanging her up in the naked branches of the alder tree and we had rain, lots of soaking rain. The new Lake Washington that had established itself in our big pasture over recent weeks had disappeared…any more of this wet stuff and we will be issuing water wings to the cattle, storing the quad for the Winter and pulling out the boat ! The sheep, aka the formation eating team have been held in the barn for their own well being. Those little pasture maggots possibly wouldn’t float too well and the little riverlets that have self designated new courses through our fields are fast running. I have nasty visions of upside down sheep coursing down stream like sticks or straws in a river race. Naturally, being confined to the barn area hasn’t gone down too well with our contrary sheep. If they are out, they want in….if they are in they very much want out and right now, they want OUT. Things are a little vocal around the barn at the moment with all the bleating baaaaaaa ing oh yes, and BAWLING !!!

Daisy Mae is in season again and when Daisy Mae is in season I guess she is about to ensure that every unoccupied bull from here to China is going to know it. A cursory glance ( because that’s all I dared) into the cow stall yesterday saw two hind legs passing through the air followed by a resounding thud. Young Goliath the adorable, placid lovely tame steer ( can you tell I haven’t yet found a new forever home for him yet ?) and the poor gentle Holstein twins scurried out of the firing line faster than she could say “GIVE ME A BULL,ANY BULL”. Daisy Mae our sweet gentle Dexter milk cow had become a wanting woman and she was looking needy. Hormones have a lot to answer for. Luckily for Daisy and not so luckily for Greg, it was milking time. Milking has a routine, each routine is executed twice a day and, since Daisy stopped using Greg as a football everything has been progressing very peacefully. Not so yesterday. From behind the gate, casually leaning on the gate post, ensuring that no part of my being was anywhere close enough to test the current efficiency of the electric surge, I waited. It was like slow motion, I watched Molly stance change. I watched her tail straighten like a horizontal ramrod, twitching. Her eyes fixed on Greg….and she reared up on her back legs, udder flapping, ready to mount a horrified Greg. Admittedly she had got it all wrong as he was looking at her, clearly not a workable technique,  but in fairness, Wayne the artificial insemination guy hasn’t had time to give her the “birds and the bees” routine.  So, poor Daisy is still wanting but Greg survived her passionate advances unscathed so it’s not all bad.

Quick blog moment I have to share. Yesterdays edition of the Gateway newspaper had a little cookie on the front page informing readers about a feature featuring a Vaughn farmer, a Shire horse and a goose. I duly noted said article, mused over the content on the front page. I remember thinking “oh, Maureen Sikora, that’s me” and then I tidily placed the folded newspaper back in the stand. I continued my shopping and began my journey home. As I was cresting the brow of the last tree lined hill, I was hit by a mental lump hammer…..Maureen, what was in that article in the newspaper that you ever so nicely put back in the rack…unread. Well, we had to go back and buy the paper. Greg was WAY more excited than me, we had been given a WHOLE page and it was both very well written and true to what I had said except for one tiny but important detail. My book signing is at the Fresh Food Revolution at the Civic Centre (Center) on the 5th, not at the Food Market.  Will Livesley- O’Neill the Gateway reporter had really done an outstanding job and we thank him. Oh yes…and not one single sideways shot of my nose !!!

Thank you Key Peninsula for all your support, it is a priceless memory.

Time to go, the cuckoo clock has spoken and the barn residents will be restless.

Take care, keep safe, M
